NMDC registers mining leases for 4 iron ore mines in Chhattisgarh

New Delhi: NMDC Limited executed and registered four of its iron ore mining leases in Bailadila region of Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh on Monday, it said in a press release. These leases are executed for a period of 20 years from 2015 to the year 2035 with a combined capacity of 29 MTPA.

"This has been possible with cooperation extended by the Chhattisgarh state government and especially Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Shri Bhupesh Baghel. The Mining Lease areas for deposit-5, 10, 14 and 14 NMZ are 540.05 Ha, 309.34 Ha, 322.36 Ha and 506.74 Ha, respectively," the press release said.

Mining leases expired on January 10

The Mining Leases expired on January 10 and the registration formalities were completed on January 13. The total expenditure towards stamps duty and registration fee of Rs 387 crore approximately was paid to the government on Monday.

N Baijendra Kumar, IAS, NMDC CMD expressed his gratefulness to the Chhattisgarh government and Baghel and senior officials of the government of Chhattisgarh for their unstinted support to NMDC for ensuring uninterrupted iron ore supply to the Indian steel sector.

The backdrop

The news comes a month after the Chhattisgarh government extended the lease of four mines belonging to NMDC (National Mineral Development Corporation) that were due for extension in March 2020 by 20 years.

A CII report that came out in November 2019 had said that the contribution of the mining sector to the country's GDP had come down from 3 percent to 2.2 percent in the last five years.

It had also flagged the issue of expiry of mine leases of a number of mines by March 2020.
