NTPC 1000 MW solar projects receive bids for only 700 MW

A total of 1,000 MW of solar projects put up on auction by NTPC received a tepid response as bids were received for only 700 MW

New Delhi: A total of 1,000 MW of solar projects put up on auction by state-run NTPC Limited received a tepid response as bids were received for only 700 MW. And out of 700 MW, only 560 MW have been auctioned successfully. The projects were put up by NTPC on offer under the Develop Build Demonstrate (DBDT) programme.

Who got these solar projects from NTPC?

The solar projects were award by NTPC to Tata Power Solar, Jakson Limited and Larsen & Toubro Limited. While Tata Power Solar won 300 MW, Jakson Limited and Larsen & Toubro Limited bagged projects of 150 MW. Tata Power Solar was the lowest bidder with an EPC quote of Rs 19.2 million. Next up was Jakson with an EPC quote of Rs 19.96 million to develop a capacity of 110 MW. L&T, on the other hand, had quoted a price of Rs 19.98 million for 300 MW. However, it was allotted a capacity of 150 MW in line with the bucket filling method followed in the auction.

The backdrop

Prior to this, NTPC Limited had invited bids for the development of grid-connected solar projects up to a capacity of 1,000 MW under the DBDT programme. The scope of work included the design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, and commissioning of a capacity ranging between 50 MW to 300 MW (in multiples of 10 MW) on a turnkey basis. The scope of work also included the operation and maintenance of the projects along with the installation of the SCADA system for remote monitoring, module cleaning system, and all associated electrical and civil work, including the evacuation of power.

The total installed capacity of NTPC and NTPC group stands at 48,645 MW and 57,106 MW respectively. NTPC Ltd currently operates 54 power stations (23 coal, 7 combined cycle gas/liquid fuel, 2 hydro, 1 wind and 11 solar projects) and has 10 coal and 1 gas station, owned by joint ventures or subsidiaries, taking the capacity to 57,106 MW.
