New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli jointly inaugurated the Motihari-Amlekhganj petroleum product pipeline via a video link. The Motihari-Amlekhganj pipeline is more than 60 km long and is the first-ever cross-border petroleum product pipeline in the South Asia region.
"Finishing bilateral projects on time has been the priority for both the nations. In the last five years, we have finished a number of bilateral projects on time and have finished several others before schedule. The ground-breaking for Motihari-Amlekhganj pipeline was done last year and the project has been completed in record time, in fact in half the estimated time period," the PM said.
Through this pipeline, 2 Million Metric Tonne (MMT) of clean petroleum products will be made available to people in Nepal at affordable rates.
The pipeline will replace the current mode of transport where tankers carry petroleum products from India to Nepal as part of an arrangement which has been in place since 1973.
"When you visited India in May, we had agreed to inaugurate on priority the bilateral projects that had been completed. I am happy to note that bilateral projects are progressing well because of our joint efforts. And it is the result of these efforts that we have gathered here to inaugurate the Motihari-Amlekhganj petroleum product pipeline," Modi said.
"This India-Nepal energy cooperation project is a symbol of our close bilateral relations.
