New Delhi: To overcome delays and ease congestion, the Indian Railways is planning to develop rail flyovers near 250 junctions, sources said. The Railways has identified the 250 locations for the construction of rail flyovers as the process will commence soon, according to media reports. These flyovers are also set to take trains to the platforms with no need of waiting on city outskirts.
Besides reducing detentions, the new rail flyovers will help avoid surface crossing on approaches of the railway stations. The flyovers are also expected to do away with bottlenecks.
The Indian Railways is also considering increasing the speed of trains at crossovers to 30 km per hour from the existing 15 km per hour. However, signaling changes would be needed for this change, Railways Board Chairman VK Yadav was quoted as saying. He added that the railway department was connecting the country at a quicker pace.
The Railways in 2017 opted to construct a 10.978 km-long rail flyover at Etawah in Uttar Pradesh. The project's total cost was estimated at Rs 894.47 crore and is set to be functional by 2020-21.
In the last few years, the Indian Railways has launch fast trains such as the Vande Bharat Train 18 and Gatimaan Express in an attempt to reduce travel time between two destinations in India.
