Scooters India Ltd will resurrect an old model to enter the electric vehicle market

New Delhi: The latest entrant in the electric vehicle (EV) market is state-owned Scooters India that announced its plans to foray into this sphere by bringing back the once popular Lambretta brand in the electric version. In a meeting that was held on December 14, the board of directors decided to diversify the product range in line with the upcoming EV market in India, a regulatory filing by Scooters India said.

The state-owned enterprise said that it intends to develop its electric three-wheeler, Vikram, in both passenger and goods carrier segment

The company is already in discussions with other public sector undertakings (PSUs) like BHEL and NTPC for the venture. The state-owned enterprise said that it intends to develop its electric three-wheeler, Vikram, in both passenger and goods carrier segment. While the passenger variant will have a seating capacity of four, including the driver, the goods carrier will be in the sub-one ton category. Scooters India also said it intends to develop electric four-wheeler of sub-two tons in both passenger and goods carrier segments.

"SIL is in discussion with BHEL, NTPC, EVI Technologies, Murata Technologies, Japan Sun Mobility and Xngri, the USA for technology/logistics partnership," it said. The company said it already has a seven-seater Vikram-EV that has received approval from ICAT and an electric load carrier of 1,250 GVW. "The company is planning for the commercial launch of the same shortly," it added.
