930 MW Kirthai Hydro Electric Project (HEP) gets environmental clearance

Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has recommended grant of environmental clearance to 930 MW Kirthai Stage-II Hydro Electric Project (HEP)

New Delhi: In a major development, the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has recommended a grant of environmental clearance to 930 MW Kirthai Stage-II Hydro Electric Project (HEP) in Jammu & Kashmir. The 930 MW Kirthai-II project will be implemented on the Chenab River basin located in village Kirthai, Tehsil Padder of Kishtwar District. This information has been shared by NHPC Limited in a tweet on Thursday.

Further, the committee has also directed the project proponent to submit the report on these points to the Union Environment Ministry and its Regional Office.

As per MoU signed between JKPDD and NHPC Limited on January 3, the implementation of 930 MW Kirthai Stage-II Hydro Electric Projects has been entrusted to Chenab Vally Power Projects Private Limited (CVPPPL), a joint venture company among NHPC, JKSPDC and PTC India Limited.

In an earlier statement, NHPC Limited had said, "NHPC and JKSPDCL shall also explore the possibility of developing the renewable energy potential of J&K including (but not limited to) solar, wind and small hydro projects either by expanding the scope of existing Joint Venture Companies or by creating a new Joint Venture Company. The detailed modalities shall be mutually worked out by the parties.
