New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal for the appointment of Sanjay Srivastava as new Chairman of Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) on Monday. According to an order from the Department of Personnel (DoPT), Srivastava has been appointed to the post with effect from the date of assumption of charge of the post, and till he attains the age of superannuation, i.e. June 30, 2023, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Further, he has been appointed to the post by temporarily downgrading the post of Chairman of BBMB, initially for a period of two years, the order added. Currently, Srivastava is serving as Chief Engineer in the Central Electricity Authority. With his new assignment in BBMB, Srivastava will replace Tanmay Kumar (IAS), who is serving as Chairman & Govt Member in the organisation.
Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) is the board of India's third-largest installed hydropower project "Bhakra and Beas Projects.' As per the Indus Water Treaty, 1960 signed between India and Pakistan, the waters of three eastern rivers namely the Sutlej, the Beas and the Ravi were allotted to India for exclusive use. To harness the potential of these rivers, the Bhakra Management Board (BMB) was set up in November 1966. Later BMB was handed over to Bhakra Management Board in October 1967. Later it was renamed as Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) on May 15, 1976. Bhakra and Beas Projects is a joint-venture of the erstwhile states of Punjab and Rajasthan. It has an installed capacity of 2918.73 MW – the third-largest installed hydropower capacity in India. It also transmits the power in the Northern Grid through a widespread network of 3,751.96 Ckt. Km. of 400, 220, 132 and 66 kV transmission lines.
