New Delhi: For better monitoring of power generation projects, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has launched a portal and made it mandatory for power generating plants, both conventional and non-conventional, to register themselves on it. In a notification dated November 9, the Ministry of Power said, "All power generating units of the country having installed capacity of 0.5 MW or above are required to register themselves on e-portal https://egen.cea.gov.in w.e.f. 20.11.2020."

Between Day 1 and Day 2 since the regulation came into effect, a total of 80 generating stations have registered on the portal.

Who need to register on CEA portal?

All the conventional grid-connected electricity generating units (whether in Central sector, state sector, private sector, IPP's, joint venture etc) in the country whether coal-based, gas-based, liquid fuel-based, hydro power-based or nuclear, if the capacity of the electricity generating unit is 500 kW (0.5 MW) and above, they will have to register themselves on the portal. In addition, all the electricity generating units of grid-connected captive power plants, grid-connected Renewable Energy (RE) generators, stand-alone (off-grid) generating units, generating units supplying power to neighbouring countries and storage device (for example battery storage) of capacity 0.50 MW and above are required to register.

Requirement of registration number

For existing grid-connected electricity generating units, including grid-connected captive and RE generating units, the registration number would be required for injecting power in the grid. For under-construction electricity generating units and generating units in conceptualisation stage, which includes grid-connected captive and RE generating units, the registration number would be required while applying for grid connectivity. However, if grid connectivity has already been obtained or applied by these generating units, the registration number would still be required for physical injection of power in the grid.

Procedure of registration

The registration number would be generated online by the generating companies/project developers, after filling in certain details. The Generating Companies would have to register themselves in e-registration portal of CEA after filling in necessary details viz. name of the generating company, sector etc. in a format designed for the purpose. They can choose any user id and password while registering their generating units. Using the user id and password generated, generating companies can enter the details of their generating units one by one for obtaining the unique Registration Number for each generating unit. The unique registration number shall be a 10-digit numeric identification number.
