CSL’s CMD Madhu S Nair gets 5-year tenure extension

Cochin Shipyard Limited’s (CSL) Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) Madhu S Nair has been given an extension on his tenure for a period of five years

New Delhi: Cochin Shipyard Limited's (CSL) Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) Madhu S Nair has been given an extension on his tenure for a period of five years, according to an order from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The extended tenure will be effective from January 1, 2021. He was appointed as the CMD of CSL for a period of five years from January 01, 2016, to December 31, 2020.

Madhu S Nair's profile

Nair holds a Bachelor of Technology (Naval Architecture and Ship Building) degree from Cochin University of Science & Technology in first-class and a Master's degree in Engineering (Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering) from Osaka University, Japan. He is trained in shipbuilding systems at IHI Shipyard at Kure, Japan and undergone JICA specialised training at Overseas Vocational Training Centre (OVTA), Tokyo, and Osaka International Centre, Osaka, Japan. He has also done research in Joining & Welding Research Institute during his Master's in Engineering at Osaka University, Japan. He has more than 32 years of professional experience in the entire gamut of shipyard management since joining CSL as an Executive Trainee in June 1988. He is a member of various professional bodies, including the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, UK (RINA), Institution of Naval Architects, India.

Under his leadership, CSL became a listed company after a successful initial public offer (IPO). He was a key player in forging alliances with international technology partners and in conceptualising the small ship division of CSL. He was instrumental in bagging international contracts while heading the marketing division. During his tenure, CSL is undertaking two major expansion projects worth Rs 2,769 crore. In addition, CSL is making a foray into the inland waterways transport vessel segment by setting up a subsidiary company at Kolkata. CSL has forged alliance with the Major Port Trusts in India, viz Mumbai Port Trust and Kolkata Port Trust for developing and operating ship repair ecosystems and is setting up separate units in these metros. A unit of CSL ship repair division will also be operationalised shortly at Port Blair.

During his leadership, CSL has taken over Tebma Shipyards Limited in Karnataka through the corporate insolvency resolution process under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016, and it is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of CSL. He has been the driving force in developing a long-term strategic road map for CSL through the company's flagship program 'CRUISE2030.'

He is a strong believer in the power of the people and the 'People-First Policy' conceived by him is aimed at steering CSL into a knowledge-driven organisation with a strong pool of human resources.
