Highest-ever scrap sold by Indian Railways in FY 2020-21

New Delhi: Indian Railways has said that it has recorded the highest-ever scrap sale in the financial Year 2020-21. Through this sale, Indian Railways has earned a total of Rs 4,573 crore during 2020-21 compared to Rs 4,333 crore in the financial year 2019-20, registering a growth of 5.5 percent, the Ministry of Railways said in an official statement on Wednesday. The previous best was Rs 4,409 crore in FY 2009-10. "Railways makes all-out efforts to optimally utilise resources by mobilising scrap materials and sales through e-auction," said the statement.

The generation and sale of unserviceable or scrap railway material is an ongoing process and is monitored at the highest level in Zonal Railways and in the Railway Board. The Railway administration makes all-out efforts to mobilise scrap materials and sell it through e-auction. In construction projects, scrap is normally generated in gauge conversion projects. Released permanent way items being offered for scrap are not reusable on track. These are disposed off in accordance with the Codal provisions of Railways.
