New Delhi: India's total installed renewable energy (RE) capacity, excluding large hydro power, has crossed the milestone of 100 GW, an official statement released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) said on August 12. India aims to have 175 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2022. India has also enhanced its ambition to install 450 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. "While 100 GW has been installed, 50 GW is under installation and 27 GW is under tendering. If large hydro is included the installed RE capacity increases to 146 GW," said the statement.

"Another landmark day in the history of the Indian Power Sector. Our installed Renewable Energy capacity (excluding large Hydro) has crossed 1,00,000 Megawatts. Under the visionary leadership of PM @narendramodi ji, we shall continue to be global leaders in Energy Transition," tweeted Union Power Minister RK Singh.

RE now forms 26% of India's total power generation capacity

The milestones assumes significance because the total RE installed capacity now constitutes 26.06 percent of India's total power generation capacity, which now stands at 383.73 GW. Even as India has been resisting the pressure to declare a net-zero emission target, its renewable energy capacity has been expanding rapidly. India stands at the fourth position in the world in terms of installed RE capacity, fifth in solar and fourth in wind in terms of installed capacity.

A recent report by CEEW said that non-hydro renewable energy accounted for 25.2 percent of total generation capacity in Q1 FY22, up from 24.7 percent in Q4 FY21. The overall RE power generation increased by 15 percent, while large hydro generation dipped by 11.7 percent, and coal/lignite generation grew significantly by 27.9 percent over Q1 FY21.
