Guwahati: Domestic Air cargo is set to get another boost in the North East Region (NER) as most of the airports will have daily dedicated cargo services at Airports Authority of India (AAI) cargo terminals. In a press release issued on Monday, AAI said that the Guwahati Airport, which is a major air hub for transportation and business, will be connected to these services on all weekdays. Apart from this, Imphal in Manipur, Aizawl in Mizoram, Dimapur in Nagaland, Agartala in Tripura and Silchar in Assam will get this dedicated freighter's services.

Airports Authority of India cargo wing, AAI Cargo Logistics & Allied Services Ltd (AAICLAS), has come with separate cargo terminals at many airports, including Guwahati, Imphal, Agartala, Silchar. Some are simultaneously operational, along with passenger terminal, as per the rules by the regulatory authorities.

The new services of dedicated air cargo flights are being started by the domestic low-cost carrier Spicejet as SpiceXpress. Through this, it is making North East India better-connected to the rest of the country as it is starting dedicated air cargo services in the region which will connect all major airports together, thereby opening larger scope for trade, commerce and bringing farmers, manufactures and traders closer. The cargo routes have been connected from Kolkata.

Schedule

As per the latest information, the cargo services of Spicejet- SpiceXpress will be available on all week-days on Kolkata-Imphal and Kolkata-Guwahati Sectors. Kolkata-Aizawl, connecting Aizawl-Dimapur-Guwahati, will be available on day 1 and 3 of every week.

Agartala will get cargo services from Kolkata on week-day 2, 4 & 5 of every week, and will connect Agartala-Guwahati-Kolkata sector. And Silchar in Assam will get similar services from Kolkata connecting Silchar-Guwahati-Kolkata on week day 6 & 7.

These destinations will be covered as air cargo stations, which will promote local produce and help farmers in generating larger income by opening a wider scope for their products. Air cargo is the preferred mode of transportation in the North East due to its geographical location and topography. Also, the products are mostly perishable in nature which has to be transported in a time-bound manner. With this, the regular export of local products and commodities are expected to boost trade and commerce in the region.
