PESB picks MECL CMD Dr Ranjit Rath for BCCL’s CMD post

Ranjit Rath, who is currently serving as Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of MECL Limited, has been recommended for the post of CMD of Bharat Cocking Coal Limited (BCCL)

New Delhi: Dr Ranjit Rath is set to be the new Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a Miniratna PSU under the Ministry of Coal. Rath has been recommended for the post by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) panel on Monday. He is currently serving as CMD of MECL Limited, a Nagpur bases Miniratna PSU under the Ministry of Mines. He has been serving as CMD of MECL since November 1, 2018.

Rath has been recommended for the post of CMD of BCCL from a list of 10 candidates, who were appeared for the interview and were interviewed by the selection panel. Out of nine candidates, two candidates were from Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) and one each from Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Ltd (CMPDIL), Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL), Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), Fertilizers & Chemicals Travancore Limited (FCTL), South East Central Railway (SECR) and Sasan Power Limited.

Dr Rath is an alumnus of IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur and Utkal University. Earlier in his career, he has served as the General Manager of Engineers India Limited, New Delhi and was also posted with Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Ltd., New Delhi, an SPV under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. He has a strong portfolio of multifarious roles spanning from strategy formulation, business development, upstream asset management and application of geosciences & exploration geology in several important projects including the creation of Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPRs) a 'first of its kind initiative in India entailing underground rock caverns for strategic storage of crude oil – An intervention towards energy security.

Dr Rath is a recipient of the prestigious 'National Geosciences Award 2016'from the President of India. He has co-authored an important book on 'Underground Storage Technologies' and has published several technical papers and participated in conferences in India and overseas.
