New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated Asia's largest, 550-tonne 'Gobar dhan' (Bio-CNG) plant on Saturday. The Bio-CNG plant is based on the concept of waste-to-wealth innovation and is located in Indore, which has been ranked as India's cleanest city in Swachh Survekshan 2021. Inaugurating the plant, the Prime Minister stressed on the importance of Gobar Dhan and said that wet urban household waste and waste from cattle and farm is Gobar Dhan.
The Prime Minister said that in the next two years, Bio CNG plants will be established in 75 big municipal bodies. "This campaign will go a long way in making Indian cities clean, pollution free and in the direction of clean energy," said Modi. He said that not only in cities, Bio-CNG plants are being set up in villages also, getting extra income for the farmers. This will help in dealing with the problem of stray and unsupported cattle along with meeting India's climate commitments, he said.
Here are things you must know about Asia's largest bio-CNG plant:
1. The plant, inaugurated today, has a capacity to treat 550 tonnes per day of segregated wet organic waste.
2. It is expected to produce around 17,000 kg per day of CNG, and 100 tonnes per day of organic compost.
3. The plant is based on zero landfill models, whereby no rejects would be generated.
4. Additionally, the project is expected to yield multiple environmental benefits, viz. reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, providing green energy along with organic compost as fertiliser.
5. 50 percent of the biogas generated will be provided to run public transport vehicles, while the remaining will be made available for different industries.
6. Nearly 400 buses in Indore might soon run on biogas generated at the plant.
7. The 15-acre ground where the plant has been set up used to be a dumping zone.
