New Delhi: Coal-based power generation capacity under outage due to shortage of coal has come down from 11 GW on October 12 to 5 GW on Thursday, the Power Ministry said in an official statement. "Power System Operation Corporation Limited (POSOCO) has reported that the total capacity of units under outage due to low coal stocks has reduced from 11 GW on 12th Oct 21 to 5 GW on 14th October 21. This is an improvement over the total capacity of units under outage due to low coal stocks of 6 GW reported on 13th October 2021," said the statement.

This essentially means that the availability of coal stock has improved at thermal power plants (TPPs). The news comes as a breather in the backdrop of coal shortage at power plants across the country, which has stoked fears of a power blackout. Outage in thermal power plants means non-generation of electricity due to shortage of coal.

Power crisis: 1 GW of power capacity brought onstream

On October 13, the Ministry of Power had said that coal-based power generation capacity under outage had reduced to 6 GW on October 13. Between yesterday and today, 1 GW of power generation of capacity has been brought onstream. The Ministry of Power has also released a fact sheet on Delhi which shows that there has been on outage on account of power shortage or power deficit between September 28 to October 13. The maximum power demand in Delhi was 4,382 MW (peak) and 95.4 MU (Million Units of energy) on October 13, according to the fact sheet.
