CIL has 20,000 women employees

CIL, a Maharatna PSU of the Ministry of Coal, has around 20,000 women in its workforce, including its mines. In September 2021, Coal India posted its first woman engineer in an open cast mine when its Jharkhand-based subsidiary Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL) appointed Shivani Meena as an Excavation Engineer in the Rajrappa project.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Coal India Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Pramod Agrawal said that until some time back, the coal mining sector was considered a male-dominated territory. However, with time that perception has changed, he said. "In Coal India, women are not just engaged in medical, paramedical and corporate office divisions, but they are also engaged in operations of Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM). We have brilliance Excavation Engineers like Aakansha and Shivani. While Aakansha is posted in Churi underground mine of CCL, Shivani is posted in Rajrappa open cast project."
