SAIL’s Director (Commercial) Soma Mondal set to be next chairperson

Soma Mondal, who is currently serving as Director (Commercial) of SAIL, has been recommended for the post of Chairperson of the maharatna steel PSU SAIL

New Delhi: (PESB Recommendation) Soma Mondal is set to be next Chairman of Steel Authority of India (SAIL), a Maharatna PSU under the Ministry of Steel. She has been recommended by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) panel on Monday. She is currently serving as Director (Commercial) in the same organisation. With her new assignment, Mondal will be first woman Chairperson to head the steel giant. SAIL's current chairman Anil Kumar Chaudhary is set to superannuate on January 1, 2021. 

Mondal has been recommended for the post of Chairman of SAIL from a list of six candidates, who were interviewed by the selection panel. The list has four candidates from SAIL, including Mondal, and others were from MECON Limited and MOIL Limited.

As Chairman of SAIL, Mondal will be the Chief Executive of the corporation and will be accountable to its board of directors and the government. She also will be responsible for the efficient functioning of the corporation, and for achieving its corporate objectives and performance parameters.

Soma Mondal's profile

Mondal is an Engineering Graduate (Electrical Engineering) from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela in 1984.  She started her career as a Graduate Engineer Trainee in NALCO, where she was involved in various project implementation activities as a part of the Technology Cell. Prior to the current position, she was serving as Director (Commercial), NALCO, Bhubaneswar.

She is well known in the Aluminium Industry for her contribution to various industry forums. She had been instrumental in devising marketing strategies of different products for NALCO in the domestic and overseas market and had also been actively involved in the launch of various new products by the company. Under her guidance, several systemic improvement initiatives were implemented in marketing and materials management functions at NALCO.
