Thermal power: NTPC declares Tanda STPS Stage-II fully commercially operational

NTPC’s 1,320 MW Tanda STPS Stage-II is set to be fully operational as the second unit of the power station is going to start commercial operations on July 1

New Delhi: NTPC Limited's UP-based 1,320 MW Tanda Super Thermal Power Station (STPS) Stage-II is set to be fully operational as the second unit of the power station is going to start commercial operations on July 1. In a regulatory filing to the stock exchanges on Monday, NTPC said, "… we wish to inform that Unit-2 of 660 MW capacity of Tanda Super Thermal Power Station, Stage-II (2 x 660 MW) is hereby declared on commercial operation w.e.f 00:00 Hrs of 01.07.2021."

PSU Watch had earlier reported that the Unit-2 of Tanda STPS Stage-II had completed its trial run successfully on April 5. The Stage-II of the STPS has two units of 660 MW each. 

Unit-2 of NTPC's Barauni TPS, Stage-II, completes trial run

In a separate regulatory filing, NTPC said that the Unit-2 of its Barauni Thermal Power Station (TPS), Stage-II, in Bihar has completed its trial operation successfully. "… we wish to inform that based on achievement of approved norms and due approvals, 2nd Unit of 250 MW capacity of Barauni Thermal Power Station, Stage-II (2 x 250 MW) has successfully completed trial operation and consequently included in the installed capacity of NTPC," said the filing.

With this, the total installed capacity of NTPC and NTPC group has become 52,650 MW and 66,075 MW, respectively, said NTPC.

The backdrop

This is the second thermal power capacity addition announced by NTPC in 2021 after it said in January that its Meja Thermal Power Project became fully operational on January 31 with the Unit-II commencing commercial operation. Meja Thermal Power Project is a coal-based thermal power plant located in Meja Tehsil in Allahabad district, Uttar Pradesh. The planned capacity of the power plant is 1,320 MW (2x660MW).
