New Delhi: In response to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced the temporary suspension of all civil flight operations at 32 airports across Northern and Western India. AAI, in coordination with aviation authorities, has announced a temporary suspension of flights from May 9 to May 14, 2025.
"The suspension will be in effect until 05:29 IST on May 15, as per a series of Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) issued for operational reasons," said it said in an official statement.
The impacted airports include major and regional facilities such as Amritsar, Srinagar, Leh, Chandigarh, Jodhpur, and Jammu, among others. The full list covers a broad swathe of airfields spread across Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Additionally, AAI has also temporarily closed 25 Air Traffic Service (ATS) route segments in the Delhi and Mumbai Flight Information Regions (FIRs). According to NOTAM G0555/25, which supersedes an earlier notice (G0525/25), these route segments will remain unavailable from ground level to unlimited altitude until 23:59 UTC on May 14 (corresponding to 05:29 IST on May 15).
Airlines and flight operators have been advised to plan alternate routes in line with the latest air traffic advisories. The suspension is being managed in close coordination with Air Traffic Control (ATC) units to ensure passenger safety and minimize operational disruption.
While the official communication cites “operational reasons” for the closure, authorities have not elaborated further. Aviation sources note that such widespread suspensions are typically associated with major national or strategic activities.
The AAI has assured all stakeholders that necessary measures are in place to handle rerouted traffic efficiently and that normal operations are expected to resume as scheduled post the notified period.
