New Delhi: The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the export of a 1 MT consignment of GI-tagged Gulbarga Tur Dal from Karnataka to the Maldives, strengthening market linkages for farmers and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs).

The consignment was flagged off on September 24 and has been exported by Mysuru-based M/s Silken Global Exports and Imports through its FPO-led brand. The consignment will be transported to the Maldives by sea.
A key feature of the export-linked value chain is higher price realisation for farmers. While the prevailing market price of Gulbarga Tur Dal is around Rs 60 per kg, farmer realisation through the export-linked channel is Rs 82 per kg, representing an increase of more than 30 percent.
The initiative also provides FPOs greater participation in export-oriented value chains and enables producers to connect directly with international markets.
Gulbarga Tur Dal, associated with Karnataka's Kalaburagi region, received Geographical Indication (GI) registration in 2019. The product is known for its distinctive taste and quality and is an important agricultural product of the region.
Karnataka is among India's major agricultural states, with pulses playing a significant role in its dryland agriculture and rural economy. Kalaburagi is one of the state's major centres for tur cultivation and production.
APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev highlighted the importance of taking India's GI-tagged agricultural products to global markets and creating stronger market linkages for farmers.

The export is expected to pave the way for regular shipments of Gulbarga Tur Dal to the Maldives, creating sustained market opportunities for producers and exporters from Karnataka. It is also expected to support higher value realisation for farmers and facilitate greater integration of FPOs into export-oriented agricultural value chains.
The flag-off event was attended by senior APEDA officials and industry representatives, including APEDA Senior Consultant Dr. Tarun Bajaj, APEDA General Manager Vinita Sudhanshu, KSPAML Managing Director V. Sadashiva and Imran Pasha of M/s Silken Global Exports and Imports, Mysuru.
The initiative is part of APEDA's efforts to facilitate exports of GI-tagged and other value-added agricultural products and promote region-specific products in international markets.
