The agreement, signed domestically, focuses on the transfer of technology related to the Mixed-Matrix Membrane Diaphragm, a critical component used in electrochemical cells. This membrane technology is set to replace the conventional asbestos-based diaphragm and also serve as a cost-effective indigenous alternative to the currently imported Zirfon diaphragms used in water electrolysers.

The technology, developed by BARC, is expected to significantly contribute to the indigenisation of alkaline electrolyser systems in India. The collaboration aligns with the Government of India’s strategic initiatives under the ‘National Green Hydrogen Mission’ and the broader goals of the ‘Make in India’ programme.

While the commercial terms and conditions of the agreement remain confidential, BHEL highlighted the substantial strategic benefits expected from this partnership. The move is anticipated to strengthen BHEL’s capabilities in the clean energy domain and reduce dependence on imported technologies for hydrogen production.

The adoption and integration of the Mixed-Matrix Membrane Diaphragm technology will enhance BHEL’s role in the green hydrogen value chain, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development and innovation in indigenous energy solutions.
