The refinery has a production capacity of 100 kilolitres per day (KL/day) of fuel-grade bioethanol and utilises rice straw as feedstock. The facility deploys advanced lignocellulosic technology, incorporating sophisticated pretreatment and fermentation processes to convert agricultural residue into clean fuel.

The commissioning of the plant aligns with India’s ambitious E20 Ethanol Blending Programme and the National Biofuels Policy, aimed at reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions. By converting rice straw, often considered agricultural waste, into ethanol, the project also promotes a circular economy while addressing stubble management challenges.

Designed as a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) facility, the refinery integrates solid-liquid separation systems to ensure efficient resource utilisation and minimal environmental impact. This environmentally conscious design underscores BPCL’s focus on sustainable industrial practices and compliance with stringent environmental norms.

The project also stands out for its execution, having been completed with approximately 20 million Lost Time Accident (LTA)-free manhours, reflecting high safety standards, strong project management, and engineering excellence.

With the commissioning of the Bargarh 2G bioethanol refinery, BPCL has strengthened its position in advanced biofuel technologies while contributing to India’s broader renewable energy transition and emissions reduction goals.
