New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the development of two major corridors under Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project—Line 4 (Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla) and Line 4A (Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug)—giving a significant push to the city’s expanding urban transit network. The two elevated corridors, together spanning 31.636 km with 28 stations, will be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹9,857.85 crore and completed within five years. The project will be jointly funded by the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral and multilateral agencies.

The newly sanctioned lines are expected to enhance connectivity between key IT hubs, commercial districts, educational institutions, and residential clusters across East, South, and West Pune. They will link with operational and approved metro corridors at Kharadi Bypass and Nal Stop (Line 2) and at Swargate (Line 1), while also offering an interchange with the railway network at Hadapsar Railway Station. The corridors will further integrate with future routes toward Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road, strengthening multimodal connectivity across the city’s metro, rail, and bus systems.

The routes traverse some of Pune’s busiest stretches, including Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway. Officials said the expansion is expected to ease congestion on these major corridors, improve travel safety, and promote green and sustainable mobility. Maha-Metro will implement the project and is already carrying out pre-construction activities such as topographical surveys and detailed design work.

Ridership on Line 4 and 4A combined is projected to be 4.09 lakh passengers per day in 2028, rising to nearly 7 lakh in 2038, 9.63 lakh in 2048, and over 11.7 lakh by 2058. Of these, the Kharadi–Khadakwasla corridor is expected to account for 3.23 lakh daily riders in 2028, increasing to 9.33 lakh by 2058, while the Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug line is projected to grow from 85,555 to 2.41 lakh daily passengers over the same period.

With the approval of these corridors, Pune Metro’s network will surpass the 100 km mark, marking a major milestone in the city’s efforts to build a modern, integrated public transport system. Officials said the expanded network will reduce travel time, offer a reliable and affordable commuting alternative, and play a key role in shaping Pune’s long-term urban development and mobility landscape.
