New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the development of a new civil enclave at Srinagar International Airport at an estimated cost of Rs 1,677 crore, marking a significant push to aviation infrastructure in Jammu & Kashmir.

The airport, operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) within the Budgam Airbase of the Indian Air Force, is located about 12 km from Srinagar and has been designated as an international airport since 2005.

The proposed civil enclave, spread across 73.18 acres, will include a state-of-the-art terminal building covering 71,500 square metres, including the existing structure. The upgraded facility is designed to handle 2,900 passengers during peak hours and achieve an annual capacity of 10 million passengers.

As part of the expansion, the apron capacity will be enhanced to accommodate 15 aircraft parking bays, including one Code E widebody aircraft, while the existing runway will continue to be operated by the Indian Air Force. A multi-level car parking facility for 1,000 vehicles will also be developed, along with barracks for security personnel.

The new terminal will integrate modern architectural design with traditional Kashmiri elements such as intricate woodwork and local craftsmanship, while ensuring efficient passenger processing through advanced security systems, check-in facilities, and spacious lounges.

Sustainability features will include water harvesting systems, maximised natural lighting to reduce energy consumption, and the use of eco-friendly local materials. The project is targeted to achieve a 5-star GRIHA rating.

The government said the project is expected to significantly boost tourism and economic activity in the region by improving connectivity to key attractions such as Dal Lake, Shankaracharya Temple, and Mughal Gardens.

The expansion is also anticipated to generate employment, attract investments, and strengthen Srinagar’s position as a major tourism and economic hub in the country.
