New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the development of a state-of-the-art ship repair facility at Vadinar in Gujarat with a total investment of Rs 1,570 crore.

The project will be jointly implemented by Deendayal Port Authority and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) as a brownfield development. It will include a 650-metre jetty, two large floating dry docks, workshops and associated marine infrastructure.

The government said Vadinar’s natural deep draft, proximity to key ports such as Mundra and Kandla, and connectivity to major shipping routes make it a strategic location for undertaking repair operations, particularly for large commercial and foreign-flagged vessels.

The facility is aimed at addressing the existing gap in India’s ship repair capacity, especially for vessels exceeding 230 metres in length. Once operational, it will enable repair of ships up to 300 metres, allowing high-value maintenance work to be undertaken domestically and reducing dependence on foreign shipyards.

The project is also expected to improve turnaround time for vessel repairs on the western coast, enhance competitiveness of Indian ports and curb foreign exchange outgo.

In addition, the facility is projected to generate around 290 direct and about 1,100 indirect jobs, while supporting the growth of maritime ancillary services and MSMEs in the region.

The initiative is aligned with the government’s long-term maritime strategies, including Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, aimed at strengthening India’s maritime infrastructure and boosting regional economic development.
