New Delhi: Coal India Limited (CIL), the country’s largest coal producer and a Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking, has entered into a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL) to set up a 500 MW solar power project in Uttar Pradesh.

The MoU has been signed on Monday in Lucknow, marking a significant step in CIL’s ongoing efforts to diversify into renewable energy and support India’s transition towards sustainable power generation. The planned solar project aims to augment energy availability in the state and enhance energy security amid rising power demand.

This initiative aligns with CIL’s broader green energy vision and represents a strategic move to reduce dependency on fossil fuels while contributing to national renewable energy targets. Both parties have also agreed to explore additional collaboration opportunities in the renewable sector going forward.

The agreement underscores the growing trend of coal-based utilities transitioning into cleaner energy spaces and highlights the role of Public Sector Enterprises in advancing India’s renewable energy agenda.

Coal India accounts for over 80 percent of the domestic coal output. The coal production by CIL was almost flat at 62.1 Million Tonne in April. It had produced 61.8 MT of coal in the year-ago period.
