Addressing a press conference, Sonowal said the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways was working to strengthen the ecosystem for shipbuilding.
"Most of the orders we are receiving for shipbuilding are for Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) from foreign countries like Germany, America, and Norway. So far, we have received orders for more than 40 ships," he said.
A senior ministry official said some Russian entities had also expressed interest in building ships in India through partnerships with Indian shipyards, including Cochin Shipyard.
Sonowal said Indian shipbuilders were gaining credibility globally, with overseas orders reflecting confidence in their quality and capabilities.
"That is the reason why we are getting this number of orders, and this reflects how India could generate confidence about its quality production, about its capacity building," he said.

Belgium, too, has expressed willingness to work with India to promote shipbuilding, the minister added.
Separately, Sonowal said he met a Myanmar minister on the second day of the third edition of ‘Sagarmanthan – The Ocean Dialogue’ and discussed coastal shipping operations in that country.
The Myanmar minister had informed him that coastal shipping was running successfully, Sonowal said, adding: "So, that is why this Sittwe Port in Myanmar is very successfully operating,"
