Core sector growth slips to 7-month low of 0.5% in May

Growth in India’s eight core infrastructure sectors slowed to a seven-month low of 0.5% in May, dragged down by declines in coal, crude oil and refinery output

New Delhi: Production growth in India’s eight core infrastructure sectors slowed to a seven-month low of 0.5% in May, weighed down by lower output in coal, crude oil and refinery products, according to official data released on Monday.

The core sector had expanded 1.8% in April 2026 and 1.2% in May 2025.

Government data showed that coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products and fertiliser output recorded negative growth during the month.

For April-May 2026-27, the combined growth of the eight key sectors remained flat at 1.1%.

The only time core sector output turned negative in the recent past was in October 2025, when it contracted 0.1%.
