The project, considered strategically important for JNPA, involved the removal of hard rock formations to achieve and maintain the required navigational draft for smooth vessel movement and uninterrupted port operations. The successful completion of the long-pending assignment is expected to improve port productivity and operational efficiency at the country's largest container port.

According to DCIL, the project involved drilling and controlled blasting operations in extremely hard rock formations with compressive strength reaching up to 180 MPa. The work was executed without causing any damage to adjoining marine infrastructure despite the proximity of critical port facilities.

The company deployed one of India's largest backhoe dredgers through its dredging partner for the execution of the dredging works. Technical monitoring and validation were carried out throughout the project by reputed institutions including Anna University, Chennai, the National Institute of Rock Mechanics (NIRM), Bengaluru, and the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal.

The rock dredging works had remained incomplete for a considerable period and were considered essential for maintaining the required draft levels for vessel navigation at JNPA. With the completion of the project, the port authority and terminal operators will be able to maintain the desired depth for vessel movement, supporting uninterrupted business operations.

The project posed several operational and technical challenges as it was executed at an operational brownfield berth. The berth had to be taken over, worked upon, and handed back within a compressed timeline. In addition, the dismantling and refitting of 16 berth fenders added to the complexity of the assignment.

The work site was located adjacent to a liquid cargo berth and an active landing jetty, requiring stringent safety protocols and operational controls. Since drilling and blasting activities were carried out close to existing marine structures, parameters such as vibration levels, shear forces, crack propagation, and structural responses were continuously monitored by independent technical agencies.

The project also faced operational restrictions, with blasting activities permitted only during daytime hours, effectively reducing the available execution window by nearly 50 percent. To address project risks, a comprehensive risk mitigation framework was implemented, including a Rs 200 crore insurance cover for the adjoining jetty infrastructure.

DCIL said it adopted a strategy focused on detailed pre-execution studies, risk assessment, tender structuring, and stakeholder coordination to ensure successful execution. The dredging works were undertaken through specialized contractors under the company's close supervision and project management framework.

The company stated that the successful completion of the project establishes a benchmark for the execution of complex rock dredging works in India and highlights its technical expertise and project management capabilities in delivering challenging maritime infrastructure projects.

DCIL added that the achievement further strengthens its position as the country's leading dredging organisation capable of executing highly specialized and technically demanding marine engineering assignments that support India's port-led development and economic growth.

Dredging Corporation of India Limited is engaged in providing dredging services to major ports, naval establishments, shipyards and maritime organisations across the country and continues to play a key role in strengthening India's maritime infrastructure.
