New Delhi: Deepak Gupta on Sunday assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director of GAIL (India) Limited, the country’s leading gas utility and a key player in India’s energy sector.
A mechanical engineer from Delhi College of Engineering, Gupta brings over 35 years of extensive experience across the oil and gas value chain. His expertise spans project and construction management, global procurement, technology selection, business development, and operations and maintenance, along with strategic and board-level leadership.
Gupta joined GAIL as Director (Projects) in February 2022, where he led the execution of several high-impact initiatives, including expansion of natural gas and LPG pipeline infrastructure, development of gas processing units, and implementation of critical SCADA systems. He has also been instrumental in advancing green energy initiatives aligned with the company’s net-zero ambitions.
He currently oversees the operations and maintenance of GAIL’s extensive network of over 20,000 km of natural gas and LPG pipelines, compressor stations, and process plants. Under his leadership, the Dabhol Breakwater Project of Konkan LNG Limited was completed, enabling all-weather operations. Gupta has also driven multiple digital transformation initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and transparency.
In his earlier roles, Gupta served on the boards of several joint ventures, including Chairman of Talcher Fertilizers Limited, Director at ONGC Petro-additions Limited, and South-East Asia Gas Pipeline Company Limited. He has also previously chaired Green Gas Limited and Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited, contributing significantly to strategic planning and corporate governance.
Prior to joining GAIL, Gupta had a distinguished 32-year career at Engineers India Limited, where he led several landmark projects, including the world’s largest single-train Dangote Refinery in Nigeria, HMEL’s petrochemical complex in Bathinda, and GAIL’s petrochemical expansion at Pata. He also played a key role in executing Mongolia’s first greenfield refinery project, strengthening India’s global energy engagement.
A recognised thought leader, Gupta has authored several technical papers and articles on project execution and digitalisation, with many of his ideas adopted as best practices within the industry.
