New Delhi: Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has announced yet another year of remarkable performance in FY 2024-25, reinforcing its stronghold in the Indian power sector. With a cumulative generation of 43,667 million units (MU), the utility has demonstrated significant operational efficiency and growth. This includes a thermal generation of 43,370 MU at a Plant Load Factor (PLF) of 75.7 percent, making it the second-highest thermal power generation in DVC’s history. Additionally, the corporation achieved its highest-ever solar power generation of 16.8 MU and hydel generation of 279.6 MU.
DVC’s power stations consistently ranked among the top 10 central sector thermal power stations in terms of monthly PLF throughout the year, with Chandrapura Thermal Power Station (CTPS) featuring five times. In alignment with sustainability goals, biomass co-firing was implemented across all its units. Moreover, for the first time, gypsum lifting commenced from DVC’s thermal power stations at Bokaro, Durgapur Steel, Koderma, and Raghunathpur. The corporation also introduced a Remote-Controlled Rail (RCR) mode for conditioning dry fly ash at its Koderma Thermal Power Station.
In coal production, DVC extracted 4 million metric tonnes (MMT) from its captive Tubed coal mine in Latehar, Jharkhand, while recording the highest-ever coal rake receipts at 7,853, surpassing the previous year's tally of 7,613. The total coal received during the year stood at 28.7 MMT, ensuring a stable fuel supply for its power generation needs.
The financial performance of DVC remained robust, with revenue collections amounting to Rs. 25,320 crore in FY 2024-25 and an annual collection efficiency of 109 percent. Additionally, the corporation witnessed a 5.95 percent improvement in water sales revenue, generating approximately Rs. 392 crore. The Transmission & Distribution infrastructure saw significant expansion with the commissioning of two 220KV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substations at RTPS and MTPS, one 132KV GIS substation at Massilung, Jharkhand, and multiple transmission lines adding up to 142 circuit kilometers. A total transformer capacity addition of 160 MVA was achieved.
DVC’s commitment to renewable energy was further solidified as it attained 100% Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) compliance. Strengthening its power distribution network, the corporation successfully commissioned four e-House 33/11KV substations in Dhanbad, Biada, Deoli, and Giridih. Notably, the Giridih substation was operationalized in a record 24 days, reflecting DVC’s efficiency in execution.
Looking ahead, DVC has ambitious capacity augmentation plans, including the development of 2x800 MW units at its Koderma Thermal Power Station and 2x660 MW units at its Raghunathpur Thermal Power Station, where work has already commenced. The corporation also marked a 2.5% increase in procurement through the GeM portal, reaching Rs. 1,467.36 crore in FY 2024-25.
DVC’s innovative waste-to-wealth initiatives generated revenue worth Rs. 256.68 crore, primarily through the sale of scrap materials and the decommissioning of old power plants. In support of its expansion drive, the corporation undertook a year-long recruitment campaign, significantly strengthening its workforce.
The year also saw DVC receiving multiple accolades for its exceptional performance. DSTPS received the CII National Award for Excellence in Energy Management, and the Council of Enviro Excellence (CEE) awarded it the Best National Ash Handling Plant under the public sector category. KTPS was recognized with the Best National Efficient Sewage Treatment Plant award at the CEE 3rd National Power-Gen Water Awards 2025. DVC also won the Champions’ Trophy at XLRI Jamshedpur for best practices in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and was honored for its Best Communication Campaigns at the 8th National Media Conclave 2024.
In individual recognition, Dr Mehebub Alam, Manager (E), was awarded the prestigious Young Engineer Award by the Central Board of Irrigation & Power (CBIP) for his significant contributions to the power sector, backed by an impressive portfolio of over 10 journals, 10 book chapters, and 25 conference-based research papers.
Further cementing its reputation for operational excellence, RTPS was named the Best Thermal Power Performing Station by the CBIP, while MTPS also received the same honor from CBIP at a prestigious event in New Delhi.
With the Indian power sector evolving rapidly, DVC continues to spearhead advancements through its rich infrastructure, skilled workforce, and ambitious capacity expansion plans. Its unwavering commitment to sustainability and innovation ensures that it remains a key contributor to the nation’s energy security and development.
