New Delhi: Net claims of non-residents on India increased by USD 16.5 billion during the April-June quarter to USD 220.3 billion, according to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data released on Wednesday.

The increase was mainly due to a rise in India’s foreign liabilities and a decline in foreign-owned assets during the quarter.

As a result, the ratio of India’s international assets to international liabilities fell to 84.6 percent at the end of June 2026 from 85.7 percent at the end of the previous quarter, according to RBI’s latest International Investment Position (IIP) data.

"Rise in foreign liabilities of Indian residents was mainly on account of increased direct investment (USD 15.7 billion) and other investment (USD 4.2 billion) compensating for the decline in portfolio equity investments (USD 14 billion)," the RBI said.

Reserve assets remained the biggest component of India’s international financial assets, accounting for 55.1 percent of the total. Overseas direct investments accounted for more than one-fourth.

Meanwhile, the share of debt in India’s total external liabilities continued to rise and stood at 56.9 percent at the end of June 2026.
