New Delhi: The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), along with the Ministry of Power and Powergrid, has invited industry inputs ahead of a formal request for proposal (RFP) for the design, development, qualification and supply of silicon carbide MOSFET-based power modules.
The modules will be used in Voltage-Sourced Converter High-Voltage Direct Current (VSC-HVDC) systems, an advanced power transmission technology.

According to details shared by MeitY, the initiative seeks to build domestic capabilities across the power semiconductor value chain, covering device design, module engineering, fabrication, packaging, assembly, testing, qualification and system integration.
Interested entities can submit queries and suggestions by October 8. The stakeholder consultation is scheduled for October 14.
MeitY said around 13,000 modules have been committed for pilot procurement, providing assured demand for the proposed development programme.
Indian companies, including startups and MSMEs, can participate individually or through consortia of up to four partners. Academic institutions, national laboratories and research organisations can join as partners.
The initiative comes amid concerns over reliance on imported equipment for India’s electricity grids, which are classified as critical infrastructure.

A McKinsey report warned that without efforts to expand indigenous electrical equipment manufacturing, the industry could face a production shortfall exceeding USD 130 billion. This could push reliance on imports to meet domestic and export demand beyond 70 percent, undermining India’s self-reliance ambitions.
The report said electrical equipment could become India’s largest import category, rivalling oil and gas.
India’s electrical equipment consumption rose by USD 24 billion between 2020 and 2025 to USD 59 billion, according to the report. Domestic production serving the Indian market stood at USD 32 billion in 2025.
Imports increased by USD 15 billion over the five-year period, with import dependence rising from 22 percent to 33 percent, the report said.
