The newly inaugurated infrastructure is expected to strengthen natural gas transmission capabilities in the North-Eastern region by supporting efficient pipeline operations, pressure management and real-time system monitoring. The facility will play an important role in enhancing the reliability and operational efficiency of the integrated gas transmission network.
Compressor facilities are essential to long-distance natural gas transportation, as they maintain the required pressure to overcome losses along pipelines and ensure the efficient movement of gas. The associated control room will facilitate operational monitoring and oversight, strengthening the management of the transmission infrastructure.
The North East Gas Grid is envisaged as an extensive natural gas pipeline network connecting all eight states of the North-Eastern region. The project aims to improve regional gas connectivity by linking supply sources with consumption centres, thereby supporting industrial development and expanding access to natural gas.
The development of the gas grid is expected to create opportunities for a range of industries, including refineries, fertiliser plants, tea processing, manufacturing and city gas distribution, subject to gas availability and downstream connectivity.

The inauguration of the Baihata facility marks another step in IGGL’s efforts to develop critical energy infrastructure in the region. A reliable natural gas transmission network is expected to contribute to regional energy security, improve industrial competitiveness and support long-term economic development.
As the North-East gains greater prominence in India’s energy landscape, the expansion of natural gas infrastructure is expected to play a key role in connecting energy supply with demand centres and supporting a more diversified and cleaner energy mix.
