New Delhi: India is planning to award thermal power projects of 19.56 GW in FY 2024-25, newly-appointed Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said after a review meeting on Thursday. “Also took stock of the various under-construction Thermal Capacity Projects & awarding projects in F.Y.2024-25 to the tune of 28400 MW & 19560 MW respectively,” he added.

India planning to add 80 GW of thermal power generation capacity by 2032

India’s power demand has been increasing at a rapid pace. In 2023, India’s power generation went up by 11.3 percent, which marks the biggest increase in at least five years. Citing the need to ensure energy security and meet the increasing power demand, the Narendra Modi has announced its plans to add more coal-fired capacity in the coming years — 80 GW by 2032.

In 2024, India is aiming to start operating a combined coal-based power capacity of 13.9 GW, which is higher than the total Renewable Energy (RE) capacity added in 2023 (13.5 GW).
