India’s 1st variable speed PSP in Tehri fast approaching commissioning: THDC CMD

THDC’s CMD said that the country’s biggest and the first Variable Speed Pumped Storage Project (PSP) in Tehri is fast approaching the commissioning stage

Rishikesh: RK Vishnoi, Chairman and Managing Director, THDC India Limited, said that the country’s biggest and the first Variable Speed Pumped Storage Project (PSP) — 1,000 MW Tehri Pumped Storage Project (4 x 250 MW) — is fast approaching the commissioning stage. He was in Tehri to conduct a comprehensive review of the 1,000 MW Tehri PSP. He said that it is a matter of great pride and a testament to THDC’s professional approach that the project is progressing well.

Vishnoi stated that the Ministry of Power has laid great emphasis on Renewable Energy (RE) and special efforts are underway with regards to the development of Pumped Storage Projects. He stated that on completion, the Tehri PSP would significantly contribute towards the nation’s commitment to net zero carbon emissions. “Upon commissioning, Tehri PSP will be a cornerstone of the country’s economy while ensuring 24x7 affordable power supply, and aligning with the goal of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. The project showcases THDC’s dedication to sustainable energy solutions and environmental responsibility,” Vishnoi added.

Maintain momentum to complete nation’s first variable-speed Tehri PSP: CMD

The review meeting was attended by Bhupender Gupta, Director (Technical), LP Joshi, HOP (TC) and accompanied all other THDC senior officers and officers of consortium (M/s GE & M/s HCC) of the project. All ongoing activities at various project locations and the progress at various work fronts were reviewed in-depth. The visit included the examination of critical work fronts like, Upstream Surge Shaft, BVC (Butterfly Valve Chamber), Downstream Surge Shaft, Powerhouse, and TRT (Tailrace Tunnel) outfall area.

Vishnoi commended and expressed satisfaction with the overall progress of project activities and the achieved milestones. He directed the THDCIL PSP team and Consortium (M/s GE & M/s HCC) to maintain momentum towards completing the Nation’s first Variable Speed Pumped Storage Project (1000MW).

THDCIL’s Director (Technical) assured timely completion of project activities and affirmed the PSU’s commitment to excellence and environmental responsibility as the project progresses.

THDCIL is a Miniratna Category-I PSU, which has expertise in hydro, solar, wind and thermal energy generation. It has an installed capacity of 1,587 MW with the commissioning of Tehri Dam & HPP (1,000 MW), Koteshwar HEP (400 MW) in Uttarakhand, Wind Power Projects of 50 MW at Patan and 63 MW at Dwarka in Gujarat, 24 MW Dhukwan Small Hydro Project, Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh and 50 MW Solar Power Project at Kasaragod, Kerala to its credit. Also, THDCIL has operational coal mines at Amelia and Singrauli in MP.
