New Delhi: India’s nuclear power generation capacity has nearly doubled over the past decade, rising from 4,780 MW in 2014 to 8,180 MW in 2024. Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh shared this information in the Lok Sabha while outlining the nation’s progress and future roadmap for atomic energy.

Dr Singh announced that nuclear power capacity is projected to triple to 22,480 MW by 2031-32. He highlighted a revised power distribution policy, with 50 percent of electricity allocated to the host state, 35 percent to neighboring states, and 15 percent to the national grid, ensuring equitable resource distribution.

The Minister attributed this growth to the approval of 10 reactors, increased funding, and collaborations with Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). He also noted diverse applications of atomic energy in agriculture, healthcare, and defense, along with efforts to harness India’s vast thorium reserves through indigenous initiatives like the "Bhavani" project.

Acknowledging challenges such as land acquisition and equipment procurement, Dr. Singh emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding nuclear infrastructure. With nine projects under construction and several in the pipeline, India remains focused on leveraging atomic energy for sustainable development and achieving energy self-sufficiency.
