New Delhi: Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited (IREDA) Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Pradip Kumar Das emphasised the need for community-driven clean energy initiatives to sustain India’s accelerating renewable energy momentum. He was speaking as a panelist during the session “From Policy to Power: How Decentralisation is Putting Change in People’s Hands” at the Sustainable is Attainable Fest 2025, held at the Taj Palace, New Delhi.
Highlighting India’s impressive renewable energy progress, Das said that the country’s installed renewable capacity has reached 247 GW as of September 2025, with about 27 GW added in the first half of FY'26, a record growth pace compared to 29.6 GW in all of FY25. He emphasised that to achieve the 485 GW target by 2030, annual capacity additions must rise to between 50 and 60 GW.
“Renewables, be it solar, wind, hydro, or bioenergy, are not just power sources but sustainability solutions,” Das noted, adding that each unit of clean energy generated helps avoid nearly 750 grams of carbon emissions, contributing to environmental preservation for future generations.
Highlighting IREDA’s pivotal role, he stated that the future of clean energy lies beyond large solar parks, in millions of decentralised systems owned by farmers, cooperatives, MSMEs, and housing societies, citizens who are both producers and consumers, or ‘prosumers’, of energy.
He pointed out that IREDA’s Retail Business Division, through its financing of decentralised renewable projects under schemes like 'PM-KUSUM' and 'Rooftop Solar', has demonstrated the viability and impact of green lending at the grassroots level. India’s financial ecosystem, encompassing cooperative, rural, and commercial banks, has matured to support renewable and retail clean-energy financing, he added.
Reaffirming IREDA’s leadership in the sector, Das said, “With 38 years of experience, strong governance, and a record of responsible growth, IREDA continues to lead India’s energy transition, from large-scale renewables to empowering citizens through community-driven, sustainable energy solutions.”
