New Delhi: Union Minister Manohar Lal on Wednesday underscored the government's push for an AI-enabled power grid designed to forecast demand across generation, transmission, and distribution.

In a video message at the Brainstorming Conclave on 'Making the Indian Power Sector AI enabled' organized by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and industry body FICCI, the power minister said that in FY 2026-27, 70 GW of capacity is expected to be added and going forward the goal is to scale it up fourfold. India has an installed power generation capacity of around 555 GW.

"Our goal is not just to increase production and set up capacities. Here comes the role of AI in how it can manage grid management and make forecasts," the minister said.

The government's vision is to have an AI-enabled grid that can understand power demand and integration of power into the grid, as going forward not only thermal but non-fossil fuel-based capacities are also to be installed in the country, he said.

Speaking at the event, Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik batted for effective adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in the power sector to improve service delivery and electricity management as the country's energy needs evolve.

"Whether it is generation, transmission or distribution, AI can help us run the system more efficiently and serve the consumer better," Naik said.

"With more renewable energy coming onto the grid, we need smarter tools to plan resources and manage supply. Policy and technology have to move together so that every household gets electricity without interruption," he said.
