New Delhi: Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) has dismissed recent media reports alleging a subsidence incident near Dera Colliery in Talcher, terming the claims as “factually incorrect and misleading.”

In a clarification issued on Thursday, the company said that a small cavity measuring around one foot in diameter and depth was observed on the Handidhua–Dera road. MCL stated that it responded promptly, undertaking immediate remedial measures in coordination with local authorities while prioritising public safety.
Preliminary investigations revealed that underground mine workings in the area are located at a depth of over 80 metres, well beyond the zone that could impact surface stability. The company emphasised that the geological strata in the region are strong and structurally sound, ruling out any linkage between the cavity and underground mining operations.
However, the company has not released any visual evidence or photographs to substantiate the clarification.
According to MCL, technical assessment identified the cause as a localised road surface failure due to improper drainage and blockage in a nearby culvert. This led to water accumulation and erosion of soil beneath the road surface, resulting in the cavity.
The company clarified that the incident was purely a surface-level infrastructure issue and not related to mining-induced subsidence.

Following public feedback, the affected stretch was excavated across the full width of the road, stabilised, and backfilled using cement-concrete material. Temporary traffic diversions were put in place during the repair work, and normal movement has since been restored.
Reiterating its commitment to safe and scientific mining practices, MCL said it continues to monitor ground stability closely and urged citizens to rely on verified official information.
