New Delhi: The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has launched "SUNtosh," a WhatsApp-based chatbot designed to bring personalised solar advisory directly to the fingertips of Indian households. Deployed under the flagship PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, SUNtosh enables any consumer to receive a tailored assessment of their rooftop solar potential in seconds.

How SUNtosh works?

Accessible via QR codes, SUNtosh requires only two inputs from the user: the household's sanctioned electricity load and the most recent monthly electricity bill amount. From these two data points, the chatbot instantly generates a personalized advisory covering five areas, namely the recommended rooftop solar system capacity suited to the household, the estimated Central Financial Assistance available wherever available, the expected reduction in monthly electricity bills, and the estimated lifetime savings from the rooftop solar system.

By simplifying these calculations, SUNtosh helps households make informed decisions without having to navigate subsidy portals, estimate technical requirements, or seek preliminary vendor consultations.

Why it matters?

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana aims to enable rooftop solar adoption across one crore households. Achieving this scale requires converting awareness into informed action at the household level.

For many consumers, understanding the costs, savings, and subsidy benefits associated with rooftop solar can be a significant barrier. SUNtosh addresses this challenge by providing instant, easy-to-understand estimates through WhatsApp, a platform used by millions of Indians every day. By simplifying access to key information, the initiative is expected to encourage potential consumers who may have been uncertain about the costs, process, and eligibility criteria under the scheme to take the first step towards rooftop solar adoption.

With no separate application to download, no account registration, and no technical expertise required, the chatbot makes the initial assessment of rooftop solar simple and convenient. A straightforward WhatsApp interaction provides households with personalised insights, making the scheme more accessible to both urban and rural consumers.

Advancing digital public service delivery

The launch of SUNtosh reflects the Government's broader digital-first approach to implement PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. By leveraging widely used digital platforms, the initiative seeks to enhance citizen services, improve access to information, and accelerate the adoption of clean energy solutions.

As the scheme continues to expand, digital tools such as SUNtosh are expected to strengthen consumer confidence, improve outreach, and reduce information barriers that can slow the adoption of rooftop solar, even when financial incentives are available.
