New Delhi: The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) which provides bus services across the state incurred a loss of Rs 1.60 crore every day in the last financial year, an official release said on Wednesday.

The MSRTC is one of the biggest state-run transport corporations in the country with a fleet over 15,000 buses and workforce of around 90,000. It caters to more than 55 lakh passengers every day.

It earns Rs 31.40 crore daily against an expenditure of Rs 33 crore, the corporation said in the release.

The total expenditure during the financial year 2025-26 stood at Rs 12,066 crore, while revenue from bus operations was Rs 11,475 crore, resulting in losses of Rs 591 crore, it said.

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, who also serves as chairman of the MSRTC, has directed officials to take comprehensive measures to reduce the losses, said the release.

Of 31 divisions, only eight -- Jalna, Parbhani, Buldhana, Bhandara, Gadchiroli, Akola, Dhule and Wardha -- were profitable and it was a matter of serious concern, the minister was quoted as saying.

"It is essential to ensure more efficient utilisation of available buses and manpower through proper planning in the coming financial year. Our main objective is to offset the remaining daily loss of Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 2 crore," Sarnaik said.
