New Delhi: State-owned National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) has signed an agreement with Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) to deploy the UAE company’s DX+ Ultra smelting technology at its proposed brownfield expansion project in Angul, Odisha.

The agreement has been signed in Dubai on Monday. Under the arrangement, EGA will grant NALCO a licence to use its UAE-developed aluminium-smelting technology for the planned addition of 0.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of capacity at the Angul complex.

EGA will provide the technical know-how, engineering designs and other information required to implement the technology. It will also extend technical assistance during different stages of the project’s execution.

DX+ Ultra is a high-amperage smelting technology designed to support higher metal output and improved energy performance. NALCO expects its deployment to help develop a more efficient and competitive smelter while optimising capital and operating costs.

The proposed brownfield project will add approximately 0.5 MTPA to NALCO’s aluminium production capacity. Once completed, it is expected to take the company’s overall capacity to about one million tonnes annually.

The agreement represents the technology-licensing component of NALCO’s expansion plans. Details such as the project’s total investment, implementation schedule and expected commissioning date were not disclosed.

NALCO, which operates under the Ministry of Mines, is one of India’s leading integrated aluminium producers. Its operations cover bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminium smelting and power generation.
