New Delhi: State-owned Coal India Limited said in a tweet that its subsidiary, Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) commissioned three dumpers of 190-tonne capacity each at its Dudhichua mine. Further, it added that "these dumpers will help enhance the hauling of coal and overburden, thereby increasing the productivity of the coal mine."

Role of dumpers in opencast mines

In NCL, coal and overburden are mined by using shovel and dumper systems for coal production and overburden removal. NCL has Electric Dumpers of various capacities including, 120 Tonne, 170 Tonne, 190 Tonne, and 205 Tonne. For CIL, whose 95 percent of the entire coal output is through opencast mines, dumpers of such high capacities are important for ferrying OB from the mine to the dump yard. OB is the extraneous material that overlays the coal seam, the removal of which makes coal production easier.

Dudhichua is an opencast coal mine. It is one of the largest coal mines of the NCL with a sanctioned capacity of 20 Million Tonnes. Dudhichua Mine has been entrusted with greater responsibility in NCL for meeting any shortfall of coal production of other mines of NCL linked to the pit head power stations of NTPC and UPRVUNL in Singrauli Coalfields as well as distant power stations of Western and Northern India.
