NCL’s Nigahi project scripts history in overburden removal

New Delhi: Nigahi project of Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) has scripted history on Friday with the removal of more than 3 lakh cubic meter of overburden (OB) in a single day. It is the highest overburden removal by any project of NCL since the inception of the company. The company created this record amid COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown.

NCL produces coal through its 10 opencast coal mines where the overburden is the soil and rock part above coal seam (layer) which is to be removed for excavation of coal. Mammoth machines are deployed in mines for the above mega task. Nigahi the biggest project of NCL broke its own record of 2.83 Lakh Cubic Meter OB removal a day set in October 2017.

NCL the Singrauli based Miniratna company is one of the highest volume (coal and overburden combined) handling subsidiary of Coal India Limited and has been entrusted with the responsibility of 113.25 Million Tonnes of Coal production and 370 Million Cubic Meter of OB removal in current fiscal.
