NCP (SP) leaders Thane on Friday opposed a planned Amazon data centre project in Thane, claiming it would aggravate water shortages, increase noise pollution and pose environmental risks

New Delhi: NCP (SP) leaders Thane on Friday opposed a planned Amazon data centre project in Thane, claiming it would aggravate water shortages, increase noise pollution and pose environmental risks.

MLA Jitendra Awhad alleged at a press conference that the project was being pushed without adequate public consultation.

"A city already facing a daily water shortage of 30 MLD (millions of liter per day) cannot afford to divert 12 MLD of water for a data centre," he said.

He also claimed that the facility would come up close to residential complexes, schools and hospitals in Balkum area, and the people will have to bear continuous noise pollution and other environmental impacts.
