New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), in association with the Department of Higher Education has launched the ‘NHAI Internship Program’ to provide aspiring professionals with hands-on exposure to India’s national highway development ecosystem. The initiative has been launched by the Department of Higher Education Vineet Joshi and NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav in the presence of senior officials from NHAI, Ministry of Education and AICTE.
As part of the initiative, NHAI has introduced a dedicated Internship Portal to ensure transparency and wider accessibility. The portal will offer internship opportunities across more than 150 major national highway projects across the country, with each project accommodating up to four interns. This will create an initial pool of nearly 600 students from institutions including IITs, NITs and AICTE-affiliated institutes. The program offers one-month, two-month and six-month internships, with selected interns receiving a stipend of Rs 20,000 per month.
Aligned with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the internship program is designed to go beyond observational learning by offering active participation in ongoing projects. Interns will gain field-level exposure to both technical and managerial aspects of national highway planning, engineering and implementation.
While the program primarily targets civil engineering students, opportunities are also open to students from IT, electronics and electrical engineering disciplines, particularly in areas such as Advanced Traffic Management Systems and Electronic Toll Collection. The recently concluded Winter Internship under the program saw participation from around 250 students, while nearly 500 applications have already been received for the six-month final-year undergraduate internship commencing on January 19, 2026. The program is also proposed to be extended to postgraduate students in the future.
The initiative reflects NHAI’s continued focus on skill development and building a strong talent pipeline to support India’s infrastructure growth.
