No fresh plans on unclaimed LIC, EPFO funds, government tells Parliament

LIC held Rs 7,318.50 crore in unclaimed amounts, including accrued income, as of March 31, 2026; Centre says EPFO has no unclaimed accounts

New Delhi: The Centre has said it is not considering any fresh measures to deal with unclaimed funds lying with the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).

Replying in Parliament, the government said LIC held unclaimed amounts worth Rs 7,318.50 crore as of March 31, 2026. The figure includes the principal amount as well as accrued income on such funds.

The government also clarified that there are no unclaimed accounts with the EPFO, indicating that the issue of unclaimed balances does not arise in the case of the retirement fund body.

The clarification comes amid continued questions over the treatment of unclaimed financial assets and whether the government intends to introduce new mechanisms to help beneficiaries trace and recover such funds.

For now, however, the Centre has made it clear that no new policy measures are under consideration with regard to unclaimed funds held by LIC or the EPFO.
