New Delhi: NTPC Talcher Kaniha, a Super Thermal Power Station with a capacity of 3010 MW, has achieved a major environmental milestone by attaining 100 percent ash utilization. This accomplishment underscores the station’s commitment to sustainable operations and aligns with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change’s (MoEFCC) guidelines on ash utilization.

Commenting on this achievement, NTPC Talcher Kaniha's Executive Director AK Sehgal stated that the power station has been instrumental in supporting national infrastructure projects by supplying fly ash for road construction, soil conservation, and manufacturing ash-based products. This initiative not only minimizes environmental impact but also enhances the effective use of ash for various industrial and infrastructural applications, contributing to national growth.

NTPC Talcher Kaniha has played a vital role in providing substantial quantities of ash to projects led by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the Odisha Government. Key road projects benefiting from this supply include Cuttack-Angul (NH55), Duburi-Chandikhol-Balasore (NH53), Chandikhol-Paradip (NH53), Berhampur Bypass (NH59), and Khordha Bypass (NH57), among others.

The station’s performance is reflected in its total ash utilization of 67 Lakh Metric Tonnes (LMT) during the current financial year, marking a 43.2 percent increase from the previous year. The station has achieved a 100 percent ash utilization rate for FY 2024-25, significantly surpassing the 68 percent recorded in the prior year. This includes a non-dyke ash utilization rate of 45 percent, further reinforcing NTPC’s objective of minimizing ash storage in ash ponds.

This success has been driven by strong collaboration between NTPC Talcher Kaniha, NHAI, the Odisha Government, the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB), and Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL). These joint efforts have ensured sustainable ash management and effective utilization, contributing to environmental conservation and national infrastructure development.

Looking forward, AK Sehgal emphasized the vast potential for the sale of fine fly ash and ash-based products in the cement industry and infrastructure sector. He also highlighted NTPC Talcher Kaniha’s plans to export high-quality ash to neighboring countries, further optimizing ash management, supporting a cleaner environment, and bolstering India's infrastructure development.
