New Delhi: Dr Ashok Kumar Panda is set to be next Chairman of Steel Authority of India (SAIL), a Maharatna PSU under the Ministry of Steel. He has been recommended for the top post of SAIL by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) panel on Saturday. Presently, he is serving as Director (Finance) in the same organisation.

Dr Panda has been recommended for SAIL’s Chairman post from a list of 10 candidates, who were interviewed by the PESB selection panel in its selection meeting held on March 28. Out of 10 candidates, six candidates were from SAIL, two from Indian Railways and one each from Central Electronics Limited (CEL) and RITES Limited.
Dr Panda is a seasoned finance professional with over three decades of experience at SAIL. He has extensive expertise across financial accounting, budgeting, treasury operations, taxation, and strategic management, and is known for his strong domain knowledge and proactive approach.
He began his career as a Management Trainee after completing his B.E. in Electrical Engineering, and later pursued a PGDM in Finance from XIM Bhubaneswar and a Ph.D. in Business Finance.
During his tenure, he has led key initiatives including reducing borrowings by Rs 20,000 crore, driving cost optimisation measures, contributing to rail pricing for Indian Railways, implementing e-invoicing, and transitioning to the new tax regime. He has also played a significant role in policy reforms and system improvements within SAIL.

Dr. Panda is recognised for his leadership, analytical skills, and ability to drive organisational change, and has also served as a Nominee Director on boards of several SAIL joint ventures and subsidiaries.
